Highlights of meetings 2010

April 2010

New Parish Clerk: Jane Dymock will soon be taking up the post. More information will be posted on the website.

Message from Sally Raven: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my links with Radley over the last three decades, and I am very grateful for all the help and support I have had during this time from both the Parish Council and members of the community. I am leaving a very vibrant Parish Council and will miss this very much, but I have many friends in Radley and my links will continue through work on Radley Parish Plan, which is being developed by a community group."

Potholes: The potholes in the area have been inspected by Oxfordshire Highways and the County Councillor, and the Parish Council continues to draw attention to particularly bad areas. Oxfordshire Highways have a new contractor from April, and the Parish Council is pressing for work to be undertaken on the Radley potholes. One good piece of news is that Church Road is going to be resurfaced in the summer – the Parish Council is pressing for a major repair work.

Radley Lakes Wetlands Centre: Community Work days are taking place every six weeks – see notices posted on Sandles Gate, on the Calendar or contact Melati Granucci on melati.granucci@northmoortrust.co.uk at the Northmoor Trust if you would like to participate. Northmoor Trust have very exciting plans for this area

Shooting: Concerns have been expressed about shooting taking place near Footpath 9 which runs along the side of Thrupp Lake. Although the shooting is on private land, its nearness to an area which is now used much more by members of the public is of great concern to the Parish Council.

Sand and Gravel Extraction: Many of you will have seen press reports about the Oxfordshire County Council's consultation on future sand and gravel extraction in the county. Radley is one of the areas under discussion, and the Parish Council is determining what action it can take to prevent any further gravel extraction in the Parish. One group, PAGE (Parishes Against Gravel Extraction), has been set up in one area, and at a recent meeting RAGE (Radley Against Gravel Extraction) was suggested as an appropriate title for Radley.

Oxfordshire Rural Community Council – Vibrant Rural Community and the ORCC's 90th Birthday : The Parish Council has entered Radley into the county book being prepared by the Oxfordshire Rural Community Council (ORCC), and in addition, the Village Shop and Youth Club have been put forward as special features of the community.

Unsung Heroes of the Vale: The Parish Council nominated Dot Hewlett for her work with the Lunch Club and the Village Shop, Graham Steinsberg for his work with the Village Shop and Chris and Brenda Gasson for the work they do with the Youth Club and Clerk to the Green Cloth. There was a celebration lunch held by the Vale when these people were recognised for their work.

March 2010

New Parish Clerk: The successor to Sally Raven has been appointed – Mrs Jane Dymock. She takes up post on 15 May 2010 and Sally will be working with her for a couple of weeks before her retirement at the end of May. More details next month.

Potholes: The Clerk continues to report bad areas to Oxfordshire Highways and our County Councillor has toured the Parish with a member of Oxfordshire Highway's staff so that, again, all potholes can be recorded.

Rubbish: A lot of rubbish has been cleared by the District Council over recent weeks.

Play Area: A new picnic table has been ordered to replace the metal seat – this will be a useful addition to the area and should be in place shortly.

Radley Lakes Wetlands Centre: The enthusiasm and initiative of the Northmoor Trust, which has responsibility for this project, is commended by the Parish Council. At the moment a lot of thought is being given to the future of this site – whether Sandles can be converted for use as a Visitors Centre or whether a new building is required, a shelter is planned on site, possible meandering footpaths to allow exploration of the area without endangering protected species, etc. A Community Work Day has been held where members of the local community working with Northmoor Trust have cleared a lot of rubbish from the site. If you would like to help by taking part in future Community Work Day events like this look out for notices posted on Sandles Gate, on the Calendar or contact Melati Granucci on melati.granucci@northmoortrust.co.uk at the Northmoor Trust.

January 2010

Bus Service: The Parish Council is very surprised that the road through Kennington and Radley had not been salted/gritted during the recent inclement weather to allow the Premium Bus Service 35 to run its normal route, especially as the Oxfordshire County Council has invested a lot of time and money in upgrading the 35 Bus Service to a premium route because of the amount of people who rely on this service. A lot of concern had been expressed about this and a letter had been sent to the Oxfordshire County Council from the Parish Council asking that it reconsiders its decision not to include this route on its priority list. Kennington Parish Council has also following up this matter. If you have concerns about this please write to Mr Keith Mitchell at the Oxfordshire County Council, County Hall, Oxford, OX1 1ND to express these.

Potholes: It is appreciated that there are now more potholes in the Parish, and County Councillor Fatemian has outlined the OCC policy for repair work. However, the Parish Council is pressing for repairs along the Radley Road where recent repairs have deteriorated badly, and for Thrupp Lane to be designated as a failed road.
